Extensive improvement programmes have been decided and implemented in order to continuously adapt the Ariane 5 launcher to the evolution of the launch market. The major improvement programmes are ARIANE 5 Evolution and ARIANE 5 Plus ESA Programmes. The extension of Ariane 5 Plus Programme up to completion, has been confirmed at the last ESA Council meeting at Ministerial level (Edinburgh, November 2001).
