The first modern telescopic observations of Jupiter and Saturn acquired by Galileo 400 years ago provided questions and mysteries about the planets that we are still trying to answer. IYA 2009 is an appropriate backdrop to illustrate the advances made in ground-based observations of the gas giants and prospects for future observations. Each planet underwent a dramatic change in its atmosphere. Jupiter's atmosphere underwent a global upheaval, from color transformation of discrete and axisymmetric features to interaction of giant vortices, and the recent impact of 2009; Saturn is approaching its vernal equinox in August 2009 and its cold northern hemisphere is emerging into sunlight after years of obscuration; Saturn rings are closing towards their edge-on apparition; Uranus underwent its equinox in 2007, where seasons last 42 years and its north pole is warming up; and Neptune demonstated a warm south pole, with a possible mechanism for escape of methane into the stratosphere. Although each planet is at a different stage of its seasonal cycle, taken together, our observations illustrate several overarching science investigations of the local metreology on gas giant planets.I will share key results from our ground-based observations of the gas giants. The main pillars of the interactive research-education-outreach paradigm or DATE (Discover-Analyse-iTerate-Educate) model, will be explained with these results.
