No other document has played such a long role in the Paschal controversy and has been quoted in support for such contrasting principles as the Paschal canon of Anatolius, Bishop of Laodicea in Syria, who died about 287 A.D. The work presented an exposition of the correct principles for determining the age of the Paschal Moon (the lunar term), the relationship of the earliest date of the Pasch (the Paschal term) to the date of the equinox, followed by a lunar table and then a 19 year Paschal table. It concluded with a discussion of the lengthening and shortening day-length in relation to the equinoxes and solstices. In the present study, the author uses the eight known manuscricts of "De ratione paschali" in an attempt to collate and restore the original lunar and Paschal tables of Anatolius. He locates the historical corruptions of the tables in the different manuscript traditions and analyses the political and ecclesiastical background that may have influenced these corruptions.
