Cross sections and thermally averaged excitation rate coefficients are presented for proton impact excitation of the ground 1s^2^2s^2^2p ^2^P_1/2_-1s^2^2s^2^2p ^2^P_3/2_ transition, in C II, N III and O IV. Cross sections were calculated using the close-coupled impact parameter method which has been modified to include the higher lying levels of the doublet states of the 2s2p^2^ configuration by means of a polarization potential. Excitation rate coefficients, calculated over a wide range of temperatures, are also presented and compared with previous results.
