Correlations between the variations of lines and underlying continuum fluxes, observed in several AGN, in particular in NGC 4151 and NGC 5848, and between the continuum at different wavelengths have been analyzed. It is suggested that the optical and UV continuum is due partly to reprocessing of X-ray continuum near the central object. The contribution of the reprocessed luminosity in the optical UV continuum can explain the observed variations. It is concluded that variations in the whole optical-UV range should be correlated with X-ray flux, and the spectrum should harden when it brightens.
