The dynamically new Oort cloud comet C/2007 N3 (Lulin) reached perihelion at 1.21 AU from the Sun on 10 January 2009 and was closest to the Earth with a total visual magnitude around 5 on 24 February at 0.41 AU. From observations of the OH lines at 18 cm using the Nancay radio-telescope, we monitored the outgassing of the comet from September 2008 to March 2009. We also observed it in the sub-mm range with the CSO and IRAM-30m radio-telescopes between 16.5 February and 2.2 March 2009 UT. The inferred water production rate remained in the 1.0-1.5×1029 molec./s range over the 7 months of monitoring. Strong day-to-day variations in the outgassing rate are observed for molecules detected at CSO and IRAM. The HCN, CH3OH, H2CO and H2S production rates varied by a factor 2.5 from minimum to maximum. The production rates of HCN, CH3OH and H2CO as well as the Doppler shift of the HCN lines display, independently, a periodic variation with the same period of 1.71+-0.03 day.
CS, CH3CN and HNC were also detected. The mean relative abundances or upper limits found are (HCN:HNC:CS:H2S:SO:CH3OH:H2CO:CH3CN:HNCO:CO) = (1:0.02:0.35:2.4:<1:47:7:0.2:<0.25:<40). This comet belongs to the methanol-formaldehyde rich comet group but is relatively depleted in sulfur bearing species. It is unique in the sense that its CH3OH to H2S production rate ratio is more than twice larger than in any of the 20 other comets we observed so far.
