During the last decade, a highly specialized team with backgrounds in education and geography disciplines, including earth and environmental sciences, has developed a unique one-week workshop that trains classroom teachers (grade level five through undergraduate college) in the effective use of earth viewing photography for a variety of classroom situations and courses. The central focus of the workshop is to provide the teachers with the proper materials, skills, and expertise that will result in confident use of the selected course materials in their own classroom environment. Teachers attending the workshop receive a basic introduction to slide/photograph interpretation, as well as more detailed information for each of the images that are part of the workshop package. While the actual number of images/photographs may vary somewhat, the targeted number for the course is 75. That number can include regional images of the local area where the workshop is being conducted. The workshop is separated into three distinct but interrelated sections: content lectures; slide/photo interpretation sessions; and hands-on class demonstrations that include lesson plans and focus groups. For example, creative focus activities and teacher lessons are demonstrated for participants to show how the images/prints/overheads can be used in a classroom. Each teacher who attends the workshop receives two notebooks to take with them upon the completion of the course. Volume 1, the Image Notebook, contains slides, photographs, and accompanying captions. Volume 2, the Activity Notebook, consists of basic information (such as a glossary of photo interpretation terms), copies of content lecture notes and overhead transparencies, and all focus group activities and lessons. Teachers attending the workshop are also introduced to NASA websites to learn how to best use these dynamic and highly motivational tools to stimulate their students either through individual or group assignments.
