As part of its ongoing efforts to make the general public aware of the importance and influence of space research and development, the European Space Agency's Technology Transfer Programme recently held a competition within its Member States to show how space materials and technologies can help meet the basic needs of society. The underlying idea behind the competition was that young designers should work materials in new ways to embody the essential characteristics, features and properties encountered in space. It was believed that such a competition would assist in promoting the belief that space activities are in tune with the social vision of the world and can offer a more human, caring and friendly face. In addition, it would increase public understanding of design, especially in relation to space technologies, by showing how cultural, social and economic influences interact with the dimension of space. The paper will outline the background to the competition and give an overview of the constraints, categories, methodology and progress. A brief description and discussion of some of the entries, especially those selected to be made into mock- ups will also be given. The competition has spawned a number of similar events in different countries and these too will be discussed.
