A method of approximation is developed in order to solve the diffusion equation for the case in which the diffusion process takes place in a thin surface region close to the surface. The differential equations are presented for those problems which arise in connexion with age determinations. Comparing the results with calculations of more exact methods, a satisfactory conformity is found as long as the diffusion losses are less than 30 per cent.
