Infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy was used in the elucidation of the effect of NaCl concentration in the morphology and orientation behavior of polymeric thin films of alternating bilayers of sulfonatedpolystyrene/poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (SPS/PDAC) fabricated by ionic multilayer assembly. It was found that the integrity of the underlined self-assembled monolayer depends on the ionic content of the initial solutions. Specifically, at higher salt concentrations (>1M) the loss of the lateral hydrogen bonding is observed, indicative of the disrupted nature of the alkanethiol packing. In addition, the presence of water was detected in the electrolyte samples, an indication of a high level of hydration in these films. Finally, an increase in the intensity of bands proportional to the salt content can be attributed to a corresponding increase in the film thickness due to charge-shielding along the polymer backbone.
