ABSTRACT In this paper, we study the nonlinear evolution of one dimensional pressureless cosmological inhomogeneities. A high-n'. solittion shock-captunng aIgonthm has been used in order to solve the partial differential equations governing this evolution numerically. Linear initial conditions have been considered. The analysis covers the epoch up to caustic formation. Our hydrocode has been tested in order to reproduce the Zel'dovich solution. Improvements and further extensions of this work are discussed.
