Rossby waves have been well established as oceanographic and atmospheric features on Earth in which the Coriolis force acts as a restoring force on internal gravity waves. Rossby waves have also been predicted to exist as "r-mode oscillations" on rotating stars and the Sun. Recently, reports have claimed that such phenomena exist as low amplitude, long wavelength features - "hills" - on the surface of the Sun by analyzing spatial and temporal signatures of the solar limb from the MDI instrument on SOHO. We have used simulated data to conduct a similar analysis of the limb and discovered that the reported signatures can be obtained by considering only the supergranule convection pattern.
