High-frequency Alfven waves and fastmagnetosonic waves may play an important rolein the heating of the solar corona and in theacceleration of energetic particles in solarflares. This presentation describes how MHDturbulence can generate such high-frequencywaves through a cascade of wave energy fromlow frequencies to high frequencies. Thethree principle physical mechanisms governingthis energy cascade will be discussed, andanalytic and numerical results based on weakturbulence theory will be presented. Theseresults show that MHD turbulence is apromising mechanism for explaining theanisotropic heating of minor ions in thesolar corona, and for generatinghigh-frequency MHD waves in solar flares thatcan accelerate both electrons and ions.
