The area distribution of sunspot umbrae, entire sunspots, and sunspot groups has generally been represented in the published literature as a lognormal distribution. However, the definition of the lognormal distribution which has been used to reach this conclusion is mathematically incorrect. In this paper, we model the distribution of areas of sunspot groups using several different statistical representations. Two sources of sunspot group areas are used: the Royal Greenwich Observatory (RGO) dataset, and a new dataset of digitally measured group areas from the San Fernando Observatory (SFO) full disk photometric images. The best match to the actual area distributions is found to be to the Weibull distribution, not the lognormal distribution. The parameters describing the RGO and SFO distributions are comparable. As of this writing, the distribution of individual sunspot areas, again taken from the SFO dataset, is being investigated. These results will be presented at the meeting.
