Space Astrometry: Parallaxes, Space Astrometry: Reference Systems

The ESA astrometry satellite Hipparcos was operational between November 1989 and March 1993. As demonstrated by preliminary results there can be no doubt that the mission is an immense success. A discussion of the conditions of ground-based and space astrometry leads to the conclusion that the capacity for accurate wide-angle astrometry is the most important advantage of space astrometry.
