The current status of the PLANET-B project, a Japanese Mars mission scheduled for launch in August 1988 using an M-V launch vehicle, is reported. The M-V vehicle, the next generation Mu series rocket currently under development, will have a 2000-kg payload capability for the low earth orbit. The discussion covers the science objectives of the mission and science instruments, orbit sequence, spacecraft configuration, power system, communication system, operation scenario, and ground system.
