The scientific rationale for the FOCAL space mission, intended to let a spacecraft travel outside the solar system and reach the nearest focal point of the gravitational lens of the sun, is examined. Attention is then given to the FOCAL mission concept, theory of the gravitational lens of the sun, search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), and scientific investigations common to FOCAL and TAU (Thousand Astronomical Units) missions. The discussion also covers international partners for the FOCAL mission and management and funding for the FOCAL mission.
