Measurements at three frequencies of the resistive and reactive impedance of a small loop antenna flown on the satellite Ariel III are presented. The reactive impedance was observed to remain constant and equal to its free space value while the resistive component exhibited a large increase with increasing electron plasma frequency. The additional antenna resistance does not result from an increased electromagnetic radiation resistance and it appears very unlikely that electron plasma waves are responsible.
