We briefly review the rich variety of gamma-ray line and neutron emission that has been observed from solar flares over the past two decades. We then discuss what we are learning from these observations about the nature, interactions, and confinement of the flare-accelerated ions that cause the emission, about the structure and properties of the flare region, and about the elemental and isotopic abundances in the photosphere and chromosphere.
