In 1972, Vela satellites recorded short bursts of gamma and X-ray radiation that could not be related to the Earth or the sun. To date, no explanation has been found for this phenomenon. Here, the information available about the gamma bursts, the problems associated with finding the origin of these bursts, and possible direction of studies in this area are briefly discussed.
