The results of a spectroscopic investigation of the central stars of old planetary nebulae (PN) are reported. Most of them are hydrogen-rich (pre-)white dwarfs. The classification of the helium- and carbon-rich central stars is examined more closely. We investigate the Balmer line problem of the hydrogen-rich central stars with the aid of the hot sdO star BD+28 deg 4211. The evolutionary status of the central stars of old PN is discussed.
