We derive the dispersion equation of radiation-hydrodynamic waves for a nongrey atmosphere in Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) avoiding the Eddington approximation. It is shown that the Rosseland mean opacity doesn't describe the relaxation processes in the atmosphere except the opaque limit. For the transparent limit the relaxation time depends on the so-called Newton mean opacity. The grey and nongrey approximations are compared for a model of the solar photosphere.
