Among the halos around planetary nebulae, a few are known to have significantly higher electron temperatures than their respective core nebulae (NGC 6543, NGC 6826, NGC 7662). Since a few authors reported on the failure in reproducing this temperature excess with static photoionization codes, different mechanisms for shock-heating the halos are under discussion. We show that such additional mechanical energy sources are not necessary. `Hardening" of the radiation field during the transition of the core nebulae from optically thick to optically thin can easily explain overheated halos, provided that the planetaries and their surrounding matter are treated fully time dependently. Our findings suggest that high-temperature halos are a quite common episode during the evolution of planetary nebulae.
