We have performed long slit spectroscopic observations at medium spectral resolution along a number of slit positions, for the almost edge-on Seyfert galaxy NGC 4388 giving special attention to the gas detected at large distance from the nucleus and most certainly situated outside the plane of the galaxy. We analyse in detail the kinematics of the extranuclear ionized gas. We find that the general rotation field can be described as a rotating disc with major axis at PA ~60 +/- 15^deg^ and inclination i~70+/-5^deg^. There is some evidence that the centre of rotation may be offset from the optical nucleus. Extended emission up to 40" from the optical nucleus reveals gas with systematic negative velocities relative to the rotational velocity field; we interpret this as evidence for interaction between the galactic interstellar medium and the Virgo intracluster gas. We have obtained a high signal to noise ratio spectrum of the nucleus showing in particular [Fe VII]λ6O8.9 emission and use it to constrain photoionization models. A two component model is needed to account for the details of the spectrum. Most of the low and high excitation lines are produced by gas with densities around 700 and 35 cm^-3 respectively. In particular the [Fe VIII]λ6O8.9 line is produced in low density gas. The best model is obtained when the ionizing source is placed about 200 pc from the nebula. We discuss the ionization of the gas at large distance from the nucleus. The emission is found to be consistent with photoionization by the central source except in the very external regions. An additional ionizing radiation from turbulent layers may help heating the gas.
