Major scientific results of the Phobos and Viking missions are discussed, as well as the implications for further investigations of asteroids during the outer solar system missions, such as Galileo, CRAF, and Cassini, and eventual dedicated asteroid missions. The cratering and fracturing details observed on Phobos by the Viking Orbiter mission are discussed and the results of the Phobos mission are detailed. It is noted that Phobos camera images improved upon on the Viking results for about 25 percent of the surface of Phobos, in the region west of Stickney. Stereoscopic information has been obtained by the KRFM instrument in 8 spectral ranges ranging from 0.32 micron to 0.61 micron. The future prospects in the exploration of small bodies are discussed.
