Infrared Galaxies: Soft X Rays

Scientific paper

The authors report on the results of the cross-correlation of a sample of 418 ultraluminous IRAS galaxies (ULIRGs) with the ROSAT All-Sky Survey as well as the ROSAT public archive. There are more than 58% (18/31) AGNs in ROSAT detected ULIRGs sample, however the ratios of LX/LIR for most of them are very low, even for some of Sy1s and QSOs. On the other hand, the soft X-ray morphology for large percent of them is extended and the X-ray spectra are hard for these extended objects. Therefore, the main energy output at soft X-ray band for most of identified ULIRGs is not from the central AGN, but from hot diffuse gas around them.
