This perihelion apparition of Jupiter was well observed, especially by an international group of photographers. While there were no dramatic new eruptions on the planet, several latitudes displayed unusual activity which had progressed along trends established in 1986. Particularly interesting was the North Temperate region, where there was a series of extraordinarily dark spots on the North Temperate Belt, and other light and dark spots all the way to the North Polar Region. We present an exceptionally complete account of these far northern latitudes, in which all these features were resolved into a regular pattern of currents, thanks to high-resolution photographs from three continents. The photographs revealed activity on the NNTBs jetstream, including two remarkable events: a dark jetstream spot passing across a white oval in a contrary current, and a segment of belt whose motion in the NNTBs jetstream precisely coincided with that of a segment of South Tropical Band in the STBn jetstream. In contrast, most of the South Temperate region was unusually bland, and the main South Temperate Belt was absent, except around ovals BC and DE where there was a remarkable proliferation of white ovals. The North Equatorial Belt was disturbed by numerous, rather long- lived white rifts, which developed into a minor revival of the north half of the belt in 1988.
