The problem of the origin of cosmic rays has been actively studied for eighty years, but still lacks a definitive answer. One of the few pieces of solid observational evidence is the detailed pattern of elemental abundances observed in the cosmic rays, however decoding the information contained in this data is non-trivial. A model based on modern shock acceleration theory, a dusty interstellar medium, and frictionally limited dust grain acceleration and sputtering offers an exciting new interpretation of the compositional data which also has interesting astronomical implications.
