Milagrito, the first stage of the Milagro water-Čerenkov detector, has been completed and is currently taking data. Milagro is the first such detector specifically being built to study extensive air showers. Its high sensitivity will permit the detection of lower energy air showers than with any previous ground-based array. In addition to its lower energy threshold, the detector will have excellent angular resolution because it measures the arrival time of many more particles than conventional detectors. This talk will present the status of the detector construction and data taking and its capabilities for detecting astrophysical phenomena, including the ability to estimate the distance to gamma-ray bursts, and of monitoring the overhead sky for other transients such as AGN flares.
