The deceleration characteristics of a neutral gas cloud in the earth's upper atmosphere are analyzed theoretically with reference to relaxation with respect to temperature and momentum for different ejection conditions. The neutral cloud is ejected in an active experiment for the sounding of the upper atmosphere. It is shown that the deceleration length of the cloud amounts to 2-3 mean-free path lengths of the cloud particles. At the free-molecular dispersion stage, a high-temperature leading edge of the cloud is formed which travels a distance of 4-5 lambda and is dissipated. The ejection of the cloud leads to the formation of an acoustic wave whose amplitude increases linearly as the momentum and total energy of the cloud increase.
