Hydrogen is the most abundant molecule in interstellar clouds and plays a determining role in reactive and non-reactive scattering processes. The two forms of hydrogen - ortho- and para-H2 - can behave differently in collisions with other atomic and molecular species. The ortho:para ratio generally differs from its value in thermal equilibrium. Techniques for deducing this ratio are discussed which depend on theoretical and experimental determinations of collision cross-sections.
