Cyclotron emission from a uniform plasma slab can be approximated by a Rayleigh-Jeans spectrum that cuts off sharply at an effective frequency m-asterisk omega(c), where omega(c) is the cyclotron frequency. Accurate opacities are used to present significantly improved, numerically derived, formulas for m-asterisk as a function of plasma temperatures in the range of 5 to 50 keV, and the dimensionless plasma parameter Lambda in the range of 10,000 to 100 million. Unlike many previous estimates, these formulas take account of the angular dependence of the cyclotron opacity and the high-frequency optically thin emission. In addition to being applicable to fusion plasmas, these formulas are also valid for the much higher values of Lambda characteristic of many astrophysical plasmas.
