Observations from the Hard X-ray imaging spectrometer (HXIS) on board the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) are used in an investigation of flare precursors, the weak soft X-ray bursts which have been observed some tens of minutes prior to solar flares. It is found that most (and possibly all) X-ray flares are preceeded by such bursts. The properties of the precursors are found to be almost uncorrelated with the properties of the subsequent flares, but where multiple precursors are found there is a tendency for the later ones to be stronger. Associations between X-ray precursors and radio bursts or H-alpha flares are found to occur but to be less frequent than associations between X-ray flares and radio bursts or H-alpha flares. A control study has been carried out to check whether the associations between flares and precursors could be the result of chance coincidences. It is found that, except for the weakest precursors, this is very unlikely. It is, however, not possible to rule out the hypothesis that precursors are merely a manifestation of the higher levels of activity in flaring regions as compared with nonflaring regions.
