A new scenario of planetesimal formation is proposed. The key process is sublimation and condensation of H2O ice resulting in the splitting of icy dust aggregates. Fragments produced by the splitting accumulate in the solar nebula and the dust surface density increases enough to trigger gravitational instability of the dust layer. We show results of numerical simulations of the dust aggregate splitting and the evolution of the dust surface density which support this scenario.
