We propose to use the MOPRA telescope at 3 mm to observe the population of condensations recently discovered in the nearby molecular cloud Chamaeleon I. We want to investigate the dynamical state of these condensations and their kinematics within the cloud with high-density molecular tracers. Are they gravitationally bound and prestellar in nature, or only transient structures that will never form stars? The selected molecular lines will also allow us to search for spectroscopic signatures of gravitational collapse. Our project should deliver strong constraints on two competing scenarii of star formation in Chamaeleon I (continuous acceleration vs. burst/slowdown).
