The possibility that our universe has more than three spatial dimensions was raised by Kaluza and Klein in the early days of general relativity. The idea has received a new twist through the realization that these extra dimensions could be only probed by gravity: their size could then be as large as a fraction of mm. In this case, matter and non-gravitational radiation would be localized on a 3-dimensional surface, or brane, within the higher-dimensional spacetime. We discuss some of the consequences of such a scenario, especially from the point of view of the cosmological evolution.
