The two purposes of fringe detecting are to maintain a suitably stable fringe pattern and to estimate the complex degree of coherence of a source. Bacause of the atmospheric turbulence with high time frequencies and generally low light levels falling on the detectors, the detectors must operate in a digital photon counting mode with high time sensitivity. This paper discribes some of the methods for detecting and tracking the fringe patterns, and explains that different methods are suitable to different observational objects and modes.
