This review discusses the observations of interstellar deuterium either in molecular form (deuterated molecules) or in atomic form in the radio or in the ultraviolet region. The more promising observations seem to be the ultraviolet observations of deuterium and hydrogen absorption features in the spectra of early-type stars. It is concluded that presently the best value of the deuterium abundance in the nearby (d ≤ 1 kpc) interstellar medium is D/H ≤ 5×10-6.
