This paper treats the metric of a rotating hole (or star) by a method that leads to a complex metric. Its corresponding real thermodynamical action is obtained, and it is indicated how this action is to be used in a well-posed variational principle whose extrema capture the properties of physical rotating black holes. This final step includes an explicit description of the boundary conditions and is essential in obtaining all of black hole thermodynamics from a stationary phase approximation to a path integral representation of a partition function.
