Recent work aimed at viewing the collisionless Boltzmann, or Vlasov, equation as a Hamiltonian system is reviewed. Two applications of this approach are discussed. First, it is proved that all axisymmetric Newtonian equilibria characterized by distribution functions are unstable to the effects of gravitational radiation reaction. Second, a partial explanation is suggested for the fact that 'binding energy' arguments apparently do provide necessary and sufficient criteria for the linear stability of spherical, isotropic equilibria in general relativity.
