A complete sample of proper motion stars, μ ≥ 0."7 yr-1, V ≤ 15.0 mag, and δ < +30°, is divided into two groups, disk and halo, for which luminosity functions are derived using the Schmidt ΣV-1m method. The space density of the disk stars is 125 × l0-3 pc-3 and the luminosity function is very similar to that for the general field. The space density of the halo stars is 2 × l0-3 pc-3, and the luminosity function shows an excess of faint stars. The mass density of the halo for stars fainter than MV = +4 mag is 0.75 × l0-3 Msun pc-3, which includes 0.24 × l0-3 Msun pc-3 contributed by white dwarfs. The corresponding value for the disk stars is 0.05 Msun pc-3, with 0.005 Msun pc-3 contributed by white dwarfs (0.5 Msun each). The halo stars then represent 1.5% of the local stellar mass density. The reddest dwarfs and subdwarfs are briefly discussed, and several that would repay detailed examination are isolated.
