The stability conditions over the age of the solar system of an asteroid circled by a satellite are determined as a function of the system separation and mass. It is found that Jupiter drives systematically binary asteroids toward the instability region of Hill's problem, thus causing a disruption of the binary system. Actual asteroids suspected of having a binary nature are treated via this approach.
