The concentrations of O(1D), N(2D) and the volumetric rate V of the luminescence of the atmosphere at λ630 nm are computed for the conditions of the Vertikal-6 and -7 experiments during periods of low and high solar activity. At F1 and F2 heights, the largest contribution to the formation of O(1D) is introduced by the process of excitation of atomic oxygen by photo-electrons; with a growth in solar activity, the relative role of this process is reduced. Using measurements of the cross section for the formation of O(1D) in atomic oxygen-electron collisions in the low-energy region, an analytic expression is derived for the rate of formation of O(1D) owing to thermal electrons, and the generally accepted expression for the rate of cooling of thermal electrons in this process is reviewed.
