We review the main nucleosynthesis processes in AGB stars, and then discuss the problems that are, or should be, attracting attention. Among the theoretical problems, we specifically discuss the usual suspects --- convection, rotation and magnetic fields --- but within the specific context of dredge-up and nucleosynthesis in these stars. Moving to observations that still require a solid theoretical underpinning, we urge progress on understanding R stars, super-AGB stars as well as post-AGB stars. We then fantasize about what we really want from our study of AGB stars, concluding that our ultimate goal is reliable population synthesis, based on the evolution of individual single and binary stars.
