Photoionization is considered a dominant excitation mechanism in AGN and photoionized clouds with strong internal density stratifications, which may be a result of gravitational/radiation pressure forces or of dynamical effects, are studied. Analytic and numerical calculations of plane-parallel photoionized clouds are compared; emission-line ratios for different density stratifications (with beta = 0.75, 1.0, and 2.0) are obtained. The stratified models show stronger ultraviolet emission lines than the similar isochoric or isobaric models and a weak dependence of the predicted line ratios on the impinging ionizing flux. They could provide an explanation of the spatial dependence of the emission-line spectrum of the extended extranuclear emitting gas in active galaxies.
