The possible existence of tidal periodicities in the variations of the length of day, the true axial period of rotation of the earth, is examined using yearly time series data from 1620 through 1987 and daily time series data from 1977 through 1985. It is found that long-term periodicities of the order of 184, 61, and 40.9 yr may exist, and the signatures for the annual semiannual, and monthly variations definitely exist. However, these periodicities do not seem to be related to the equilibrium tidal effects produced on earth by the sun and moon. The amplitude of the 18.6 yr periodicity is determined; the reported 50-day periodicity is not detected.
