Consideration is given to the chemical consequences of a hydrothermal reprocessing of Triton's volatiles budget due to tidal heating after its capture by Neptune; an initially cometary composition is assumed for the icy mantle of Triton. Calculation results indicate that, irrespective of the initial source of nitrogen on Triton, both N2 and NH3 should be abundantly produced by hydrothermal reprocessing. Triton is held to preserve the organic chemistry which may have resulted in the origin of life in the early earth's hydrothermal systems.
