Difficulties anticipated in the Soviet Venus 9 and Venus 10 touchdown and surface photography, and the importance of the successful mission, are discussed. Although predictions indicated only 1 per cent of sunlight incident on the planet reach the surface and the scene would be swamped with low-contrast diffuse light, the Soviet images telemetered back showed abundant light and clear transparent atmosphere amenable to photography from greater heights. The split space probe concept, with one probe making a soft landing and the other transmitting data (picked up from the soft-landed probe) from its circum-Venus eccentric orbit back to earth, is discussed. Tentative geological inferences on Venus surface structure are advanced.
