Using 26 Coude spectrograms, the radial-velocity variations of HD 77581, the optical component of the X-ray binary system Vela X-1, are analyzed to determine the total mass of the system as well as the masses of each component. Mean values of the radial velocity as determined from the He I lines and the lines of heavier ions are employed in the analysis, and the best-fitting radial-velocity curve is computed both for all the lines together and for the He I and heavier-ion lines separately. The results show that the total mass of the system is approximately 21.6 solar masses, the mass of the X-ray star is approximately 1.61 solar masses, and the mass of Hd 77581 is approximately 20 solar masses. The absolute visual magnitude, bolometric magnitude, and radius of HD 77581 are estimated. It is concluded that the mass of the X-ray star is just consistent with the allowed theoretical masses for neutron stars and that HD 77581 is not undermassive for its spectral type (B0.5 Ib).
