Sources for the most important ionospheric parameters (electron density, electron and ion temperatures and positive ion composition) for the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) are discussed. The IRI, scheduled for publication in 1978, is intended to serve as a standard reference for experiment design, estimation of environmental effects, and full-wave computations. Peak electron density values obtained by the international ionosonde network, incoherent scatter techniques for determining ion temperature, satellite measurements of principal ions, and ion mass spectrometer measurements below 100 km are considered. Propagation experiments to check the IRI profiles are suggested.
